The real reason you lack consistency with your content
And how to fix it
Have you ever sat in front of your computer, thinking you should be writing content, but had no idea what to write about?
The answer is probably yes. And according to Nicolas Cole, that’s because you suffer from at least one of the problems below.
Distractions
Over-editing
Perfectionism
Procrastination
Self-confidence
Generating ideas
Impostor syndrome
Writing consistently
Finding time to write
Loose feedback loops
My #1 problem, actually my top 3, were Distractions, Idea generation, and writing consistently. So, how did I solve them?
Distractions
Working for yourself and from home can be a double-edged sword. You set your own time, meaning nobody is chasing you to get to the office by 9, sit down at your desk and get cracking with the tasks of the day.
The truth is, if you’re not motivated or dedicated, there’s not much you can do to solve it. You need to truly understand Why you’re doing this in the first place. For me, it’s financial freedom and looking after my family. Find your Why and make sure to have that plastered somewhere in your workspace.
Ok, that’s cool, but that’s not enough. Distractions are everywhere in the age of the Internet. You must find a way to remove them. My #1 distraction is YouTube.
I love YouTube—maybe a bit too much. One simple yet effective way to remove that from your day is to use a browser blocker like Freedom. I know it sounds silly, but if you’re still stuck watching the latest UFC video instead of writing your next piece of content, you need external help. Freedom lets you block specific websites throughout your day, so you can’t use them.
I’m trying to say that you must find ways to solve your problems without relying on your Tuesday motivation rush. Using Freedom allowed me to run it in the background without thinking about it. And it works for me.
Idea Generation
This is a big one. In today’s world, we’re constantly doing something, keeping our minds busy. The problem with that is you leave no time for your imagination to do the work.
Creativity only works without distractions (funny how that works, he!). You must take time to do nothing but think.
Every Sunday morning, I have 2 hours blocked in my calendar to do absolutely nothing but think. No computer, just a notepad.
If you’re always checking other people’s content (i.e YouTube, X, Linkedin, etc), you can’t create space to think for yourself.
I highly recommend blocking at least one hour, two
if possible. It takes some time to get your juice flowing, and you must schedule it. Once again, don’t rely on motivation or free time. Plan it, execute it.
Writing consistently
A master of their craft practices daily. Whether you want to be a CS:GO pro, footballer, or content creator, you must put in the hours. There’s no two ways about it.
While writing has an element of creativity, you can’t wait for your spark if you want to make a living from it. The same goes for most things in life. Reps matter.
Morning hours are my most productive ones. If you’re a night owl, that’s ok too. Just find what works best for you and schedule it. I find having calendar notifications helps me a lot. I’m a big believer in scheduling things that need to get done.
It eliminates guesswork and replaces it with a must-do attitude. My schedule is my master, and I must abide by it at all costs.
That’s it for today, have a killer week, and I’ll see you next time.
