I accidentally created a $4,500/mo business.
I hate to break it to you but...
GM Thinkers. I’ve been meaning to send this email since Thursday, but excuses got in the way. From now on, I’ll be sending you this newsletter on Sundays <3.
Today, I want to share a few lessons from recent events in my life. After nine months of gruelling work, June 14 was my last day at Binance. The truth is, I had wanted out for a few weeks.
I wasn’t exactly sure what I was going to do. My thesis? Three people had reached out since I decided to up my Twitter game in May for writing gigs. Something was brewing, and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity, so I quit to test my theory.
Today’s topics
I created a business by accident, and it’s doing $4.5k/mo in 45 days.
How to attract more clients: My strategy.
1-1,000 follower challenge: day 10.
I created a business by accident, and it’s doing $4.5k/mo in 45 days.
In May, I started to put a lot of work into my X content. I got great feedback and many DMs that led to deeper conversations. Someone even reached out enquiring about ghostwriting for them. And then another one.
Here’s my first enquiry. The truth: I didn’t have a ghostwriting business. I said yes and jumped on the ride to see what would happen. 3 weeks later, I would close this deal.
Fast forward to June 14, I left Binance. I had found someone willing to pay me $1,500/mo to write their weekly content. This was now a business.
A second client was onboarded halfway through July. Someone I knew, who I pitched to. Finally, a 3rd one last week was also found via my network.
I find that interesting as it shows you can find clients around you. Don’t look outside of your circle just yet.
The challenging part is agreeing on the scope of work. Some clients only want content ready to post. Some want engagement as well, which will be the most time-consuming part of the job and the least productive.
Identifying the number of hours I think the job will take is essential. I sell a result, not time. Therefore I have to ensure the reward-to-ratio is there for the required work.
How to attract more clients: My strategy.
I have a piece of good news and a bad one.
The good one: I haven’t done any cold outreach.
All leads have been organic and result from posting content on X. My first client DM’ed me. The second one was a connection who needed writing services. The third one is an influencer I vaguely knew who DM’ed me.
I have had 8 leads, closed 3, declined 2, and have 3 at the proposal stage.
The bad one: There’s no magic formula
I don’t have a magic funnel page to give you. There’s no cold email strategy. No secret network. None of that.
Every lead and client reached out because they have seen my content, vibed with it, and wanted their account to get some of that sauce. I’m not bragging. I’m just telling you the facts.
I have no fancy website, business card, professional email, testimonial or case study. I am not particularly handsome either, so it must be something else.
Create content your ideal client wants to read.
I’ve spoken to many creators, and one recurring theme is easily identifiable. Your content is your CV, and publishing consistently will put it in front of your potential customers.
Make sure you are creating content around what your client wants. Niche down, and then niche down twice.
Here’s an example. Talk about fitness > Eat to stay fit > Stay lean with a keto diet.
You may think you are removing potential clients, but you are not. Those in your niche will be happy to pay for a specialist. It’s easier to sell a $1,000 ticket than 10 tickets at $100.
Be the loudest voice in your niche, and opportunities will come to you. People like Wale, Mortiz, Legendary and many more received life-changing opportunities by posting great content they loved producing.
1-1,000 follower challenge: day 10.
I’m 1/3 of the way through my 1-1,00 follower challenge. At linear growth, I should be at 330 followers, but I’m not worried about that. I knew the first week would be the hardest and slowest.
If you read last week’s edition, I talked about the Day 1 process. Here’s how I got to 200.
Day 1-4: I focused on my PFP community. I met my first 30-40 followers, sent a few DMS, and received more. I also got invited to a few X group chats.
Those really helped me get a few more followers, and I also met some nice people. It’s a lot easier when you have people to talk to who will give you your first support in your creator’s journey.
Day 5-10: I’ve consistently posted GMs, but now it’s time to start pushing some content. I have over 100 followers.
I wrote 3 pieces of content about influential people in the NFT space, founders or builders. It got decent traction and a few more followers.
One of them even followed me and congratulated me on the write-up but didn’t RT.
That would have been huge exposure.
My best-performing piece of content, however, comes from posting my story. One single tweet generated many impressions, but most importantly, 177 profile visits and I gained 80 followers in 48h.
I’ve started to gain momentum, and If I continue on this path, I have a good chance at success, but it’s nowhere near done yet. I have 3 potential clients starting soon, my existing clients, content and this challenge.
The goal is to run this challenge with the least time invested.
30 minutes on GM duties
1h per week writing 12-15 single tweets
2h per week writing 2 threads
15 minutes supporting in the group chats
Thanks for taking the time to read my content. I’ll see you on Sunday!
